White Roses

"White Roses" watercolor on paper  10" x 7"/ 25 x 18

I have been struggling with flowers. I started a painting last week which wasn't working out and ended throwing it away. There was too much going on and no inspiration. It's also a  nice feeling sometimes to be able to separate oneself from what we are creating and have the courage to start over.

Next, I chose this image for its monotone color palette, attempting to simplify things for myself.  I've been noticing that I get more hues when I use less colors in my palette. Funny! I think it's the magic of watercolor.

Gratitude goes to the fantastic free image library at Wet Canvas where I found this photo reference to work with.

Today we celebrate Father's Day here in Italy. It's celebrated on the Feast of St. Joseph. I wish everyone, especially all the fathers and Joseph's out there a special day!

  1. You've done a lovely job with the flowers Celia. I like how your two roses are in different stages of the blooming process. You've got some great colours going on in the shadows.

  3. Celia - these roses are lovely. I love the color of the vase used as well. I am always starting over...seems like the more I fiddle with watercolor the worse it gets...sometimes there is no helping it - some things just need to be restarted. Thanks for sharing. I so enjoy your work.

  8. Celia, thanks for visiting my blog and taking time to comment. I've enjoyed browsing your art and seeing your accomplished watercolours.

I so appreciate an artist who can create flowers, as its something that mostly seems to defeat me! I shall make sure I return to see more of your work.

  9. Celia, first I thank you for your nice comment, and joining my blog, I hope you visit often.
My granparents came from Italy and I love seeing photos of that area of the world. It's sentimental to me, because as a child my grandmother told me many stories.
Your roses are just beautiul and white flowers are not always easy to paint, You've done it so well.

African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!
