A GIFT- DAYS 23 AND 24

day 23
Primroses

day 24
Prim and Proper
 watercolor on FABRIANO Artistico paper
12,5 x 18cm/ 5" x 7"

We celebrated my husband's birthday this week and we received primroses wrapped in paper as a gift.

I approached the paintings differently even if I was working on them at the same time.  I sat down while I painted day 24 and stood up while painting the other. It is fun to see what works best. I tried to stay loose, working with larger brushes and forced myself to not fiddle too much. Something I normally do, it is very hard for me to not want to add that last wash or bit of color.

I love to listen to Sky.FM as I paint. They have increased their selections and I find music to fit my every mood. For these paintings I picked Smooth Jazz. It's easy listening and great to tap your feet to!

  1. Lovely loose and colourful, Celia! I tend to paint standing up, so I'm interested what you like best.

  2. What a lovely body of work Celia. Just caught up with what you have been up to. Loved Sun Ripe and Market Day but favourite was La Pieta. You captured the feeling so well. Good Luck with the rest of the challenge.

  3. I love to listen to old-style jazz and bebop while I paint.
You beat me to it: I was, seriously, just thinking of trying to paint a simple still life--drape, apples--one while standing, one while sitting!
    These are both lovely!
And happy birthday to your husband!

  5. OOOH! Love the colors! They both have their own charm. I can't decide if I paint any looser standing up than sitting down. I don't think it matters much. Lovely job on these!

  6. Hi Celia, more lovely, vibrant and loose paintings! When I was teaching art to 13 year olds I would occasionally have them stand while they painted. It does make for a different experience and product, loosens up the whole arm. Great experiment!

  8. Celia - wow - so pretty. Like the title you chose for the last - very appropriate. Now could you send me some of those primroses - I need a hint of spring! (LOL). Loved seeing your paints and everything laid out too. It is always fun to see another's artists work place. Have a great week-end.

  12. Sempre piĂ¹ belli i tuoi fiori, Celia. Anch'io spesso ascolto musica mentre dipingo, ma non sempre mi aiuta, qualche volta devo spegnere per non farmi distrarre. Buona domenica!

  13. Celia, Scrolling through your blog I'm enjoying your fabulous watercolors, great style, wonderful blog portfolio. I identify with your "passion for watercolor", sketching one every day for two years, starting on a trip to the Italian end of Switzerland to visit family, like you US citizens living in Europe. I'm also posting watercolors to 30 Days, but under my real name (this is my commenting pseudonym but who's me is on the blog is found by following the link to my watercolor blog). Keep on keeping on with your fine watercolors, lovely technique. I'm adding a link to your blog on my watercolor art blog.

African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!
