DAYS ELEVEN THROUGH THIRTEEN...

DAY ELEVEN
  HEART XMAS
watercolor on FABRIANO Artistico paper

12,5 x 18cm/ 5" x 7"

Weekends are most difficult for me, I managed to stay on schedule with my 30 day challenge nonetheless. I admit that I am feeling exhausted. I was hoping that if better prepared it would be somewhat easier. It feels harder to keep up now than last time.

I wanted a change of pace from painting from photos by setting up these two still-life's. I am either late or early on Christmas, but my daughter's last candy cane was arousing my attention. She plans on using it in a recipe called "peppermint hot cocoa". She very graciously will wait another weekend to try this out, spontaneously promising to share some with me! I turned the same candy cane in two different directions.

DAY 12

STUDY OF MICHELANGELO'S
DRAWING FOR THE HEAD OF LEDA ,
SANGUINE PENCIL ON PAPER
12,5 x 18cm/ 5" x 7"

Day twelve is another attempt to sketch from a book I have about Michelangelo. I gave myself an hour's time limit on the drawing. It is an incredible experience, you notice the details even more. My plan is to take a break on Sundays and devote an hour to drawing, during the challenge (hopefully even after the challenge).

DAY 13
  FINEST QUALITY
watercolor on FABRIANO Artistico paper

12,5 x 18cm/ 5" x 7"

Day thirteen is my morning cup of tea, not much excitement here... I'm finding that painting without using masking fluid gives a nicer result. I am careful about the white areas but if I do cover them, I darken the areas around it more. Masking fluid is too harsh and has ripped my paper too many times.

Thank you again for the kind comments and feedback!  I appreciate it even more knowing that the participants are numerous,  I realize it does take away time to keep up!

  1. Wonderful job showing the shine on the candy canes and the spacing of the stripes!!! I'm glad your daughter was willing to wait while you painted. I like the tea cup too...sometimes it is better (but difficult) to not use masking. I've had the same problem with masking so I only use it if I absolutely have to. Nice study of the head.

  2. Love your candy cane composition and as Joan said you have the shine. Good idea mixing up the days and doing some drawing for some relief too. My wrist is quite sore as I realize I cannot do big paintings everyday. Hope we both make it to the end

  8. I LOVE the candy cane Celia! So beautifully done - great colours and shine! It has a very festive ambience about it and the composition works really well.
Love the drawing too and your cup of tea. Such a great variety. Your idea of drawing every week is a good one and I hope you are able to continue it after the challenge. I know how exhausted this challenge can make you feel. I hope you are able to paint two in one day so you can have a day off.

Complimenti! Un abbraccio.

  10. I like your plan of devoting one day to drawing--what a good idea. And your drawings are so sensitive: I look forward to seeing more of them. I like these watercolors too--both of which make a lot of a simple subject!

  12. Celia all three of these are lovely. The candy canes look good enough to eat. I think your portrait is outstanding. Nothing ordinary either about that cup of tea. Wish we could share a cup! Have a beautiful day.

African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.
