A week in sketches

I have been very busy these past two weeks. I've tried to organize myself in a way to still find time to sketch. If I have my sketching supplies at hand, I try to put something down even if I finish it later.

I spent an hour waiting at the health office just to pick up some paper work... by luck I had brought my sketching supplies!

I painted the fruit stand across the street. The first one I  first drew out, then added the black ink.The second page was drawn immediately with marker. When I went home, I added the watercolor. Cars are not my forte...

People waiting do not stay still, constantly looking left then right, it is a challenge to get a likeness. I try to fix one side then hope to catch them again when they are in the same position. One of these days I will go up and ask them to...please stop moving!!!

I love the long roots of these fresh white onions. I would like to incorporate some calligraphy but feel rather shy about it, hence the small writing on the bottom

In this sketch I wanted to make it like the many recipe sketches I've seen some artists do so beautifully. I painted this while the green beans were boiling. Great way to bring my two passions together: food and watercolors!

A day at the beach provided me with the inspiration for my last two sketches...

and another wonderful opportunity to draw people. The man reading was very far away ... people notice immediately if you even slightly look at them.

Thanks for following me along in my sketchbook!

  1. You made me laugh when you said that one of these days you're going to tell the people not to move because you're sketching! I love all your sketches, Celia especially the beach scene with the umbrella...wonderful work!

Your recipe sketch is a great idea. Painting food, cooking food and writing down some of your recipes. What a great keepsake that would be!

  10. Great sketches!!! I really like the one of the green beans recipe and the umbrella and chair at the beach...but they all have a nice charm. I am glad you are getting sketches done. I find that when I am at the beach I wear my sunhat and glasses and people usually don't suspect I'm sketching them at all.

  13. You HAVE been busy! I love how each of these sketches shows a part of who you are. The places you go, the things you observe and take note of... and I admire how you use every opportunity to draw and paint, and capture the moment! Those quick sketches of the people are really good exercises to get the brain thinking about the most important lines and shadows of the subject... but I've never been good at that quick stuff! You make it look easy here! My favorite is the beach painting :)

    2. And I'd love to be able to paint the way that you do! I don't think I will ever be able to do that, but I have started to use my little moleskine notebook more, and to carry it with me in my purse to draw 'on the spot', just like my friend Celia!

  18. Hello Celia
    Your watercolours are wonderful!
My favourite is the car - a little quirky which is what I love!
You have such a talent. I would love to paint but I would have to take a photo and draw later as I would find it difficult when people move positions!
The beach scenes are lovely too.
I'm now following you and hope I can learn something along the way!

African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.
