Sketchbook Pages...

I have been practicing in my sketchbook and wanted to share some of my favorite pages. It's a place where I can play, experiment and, hopefully, improve.

I recently had the pleasure of a visit from a friend, who is an incredible sketcher and watercolor artist, Joan Tavolott .It has been a dream of mine to be able to sketch along with her! We had the most fun sketching on the Spanish Steps, not even the rain stopped her! I started my sketch on location , then added the paint at home. It is intimidating working in the confusion of the Spanish Steps. I had a difficult time taking in all the information.

My sketch on the Spanish Steps

Joan Tavolott sketching in the rain, determination at its finest!

This experience has inspired me to get out more. I am lucky to live in a vibrant city: yesterday I brought my sketching supplies along while I ran errands. My favorite moment was sketching at the market. I feel like it was a breakthrough moment for me. It didn't take me as long as I thought it would and the fun part was interacting with the surroundings.

... at the post office and on the bus...

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Thanks for showing us inside your sketch books Celia, you have some lovely ones for sure. How fantastic to meet up with Joan I agree she is a Master sketcher and so committed I have trouble keeping up with all her blog posts she is so prolific. Sketching is a skill in itself and one I would aspire to have but I know I would have to get out and about and I am definitely a studio bound girl. Good luck with yours I look forward to seeing more from your beautiful part of the world

    1. You live in a beautiful area to do it too! I have a problem with confusion, I need my peace and quiet when working. Then I also feel pressured if people look over my shoulder but Joan is definitely a pro...cool as a cucumber. I realize she has been at it for a long time so I hope with a lot of practice to improve.

  11. Buona serra, Celia! We finally home today and I am posting again. I'm forcing myself to stay awake until a normal NY bedtime to adjust to the time difference. I love the way your sketch of the buildings at the Spanish Steps came out after you added the watercolor! That was a fun day...thanks again for coming to meet me and for being such a trouper sketching in the rain with me. Bravo that you are getting out and sketching locally too. Once you start to do it more it becomes easier and you can capture a lot in a small amount of time. I like the one of the flowers at the market. All it takes is a little bit of a view to say so much!

  20. Wow Celia, what a great job you did of your sketch on the Spanish steps. All your sketches look fantastic! I had just visited Joan's blog and seen beautiful photos of the two of you sketching together and felt a pang of longing to be there too! I have become addicted to sketching on location since my UK trip and Joan's amazing blog has been a big influence on me. How wonderful for the two of you to meet in the flesh. African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.
