More Violets!

African Violets
3.5 x 5 inches
watercolor on Fabriano CP paper

I have been working on studying my African Violet plant. It has been cheering up the grey and dreary winter days we have been experiencing.

I worked on two little studies to play with colors. One I painted with my own color mixes, the other with colors right from the tube. It was a fun exercise.

I drew my composition from life and from my previous sketch. I've added masking fluid to save some white areas. I only need to add the paint... I can hardly wait!

Thank you for stopping by!

  1. These are really nice! You do such a good job with the masking. I always get such hard edges and then I regret using it. These must look like a nice bit of color in what is seeming to be such a long winter. Happy painting.

  8. Dear Celia - these are truly lovely. We must have been in the same frame of mind today because I just purchased my Mom a lovely violet African violet for her room at rehab. Maybe I will just have to try to capture those lovely petals before I deliver it - so glad to see your lovely art. Take care and have a super week-end. Hugs!

  9. Oh Celia these are both delightful. It comes across loud and clear with both that you are enjoying the study and experience of African Violets. Painted with such freedom and joy of colour and form. It is also a joy to watch your development. Take care.

  10. Celia, wonderful violets! I love your soft color colors and edges. Flowers are a great subject to paint on a dreary winter day. In fact you have inspired me to paint a floral myself. Happy painting!!

  12. I so love African Violets! You out did yourself with this Celia! I love your technique! I know I have said this countless times but you certainly use watercolor the way it should be used! (In my humble opinion!) Fluid! Spontaneous! Never ever over worked or tight! I love the way you use the medium as much as your rendition of the subject matter! Watercolor fo watercolor sake! Bravo buddy!
    Take care!

African Violets

African violets sketchbook page I painted this sketch slowly, over a few day's time.  I use my sketchbook to experiment towards improving my skills although I seem to always find myself in a hurry to finish the sketches. It took my African Violets over two years to bloom, I felt compelled to capture this achievement! The flu is making the rounds around my household once more, I hope everyone else is well!

Pansies

Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.
